2027 Scholarship Opportunities

Hughes/Demmin Memorial Scholarship
Two winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship award!
Eligibility:
- Current or new member of Amherst FCU in good standing
- Graduating high school senior with plans to attend and accredited two or four year college/university
- Must be an active volunteer and/or active in their community
Requirements:
- Completed and signed application form
- Essay of at least 250 words following the prompt: What inspires you to pursue your goals? Describe a person, experience, challenge, or belief that has influenced your ambitions and explain how it has shaped your vision for the future.
- Letter of reference from a current teacher, guidance counselor, or other adult role model commenting on your character and abilities
- A copy of your high school transcript
- A resume detailing honors/awards received, leadership roles, and extra-curricular activities
- Applications due to the Amherst Federal Credit Union office by April 1, 2027

Career Pathways Scholarship
One winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship award!
Eligibility:
- Current or new member of Amherst FCU in good standing
- Graduating high school senior with plans to attend an accredited or recognized post-secondary vocational, technical, trade, certificate, apprenticeship, or career-training program.

Requirements:
- Completed and signed application form
- Essay of at least 250 words following the prompt: Describe what inspired you to pursue a career in the skilled trades or vocational field, and how you hope your future career will allow you to make a difference in your community?
- Letter of reference from a current teacher, guidance counselor, or other adult role model commenting on your character and abilities
- A copy of your high school transcript
- A resume detailing honors/awards received, leadership roles, and relevant work experience
- Applications due to the Amherst Federal Credit Union office by April 1, 2027

Amherst High School Scholarship
One winner will receive a $500 scholarship award!
Eligibility:
- Current or new member of Amherst FCU in good standing
- Graduating Amherst High School senior
- Must be an active volunteer and/or active in their community
Requirements:
- Completed and signed application form
- Essay of at least 250 words following the prompt: What advice or lesson would you share with someone younger than you, and why?
- Letter of reference from a current teacher, guidance counselor, or other adult role model commenting on your character and abilities
- A copy of your high school transcript
- A resume detailing honors/awards received, leadership roles, and extra-curricular activities
- Applications due to the Amherst Federal Credit Union office by April 1, 2027

New York Credit Union Association Scholarship Program
Amherst FCU also participates in the NYCUA Scholarship Program, which offers scholarships to credit union members across the state. Applications must be submitted online through the NYCUA website, and are due January 9, 2027 and must be submitted online to the NYCUA Scholarship Portal.
When submitting your application, you will be asked to fill out fields for “Nominee” and “Nominated By.” Applicants will need to input their own name and email address for both sections. You may disregard the section that is asking for the reasons for nomination.
Applicants will be asked to enter a “Credit Union Verification Code” when submitting their application. Please contact the Amherst FCU office to receive your verification code.
Frequently Asked Questions.
When and how are scholarship winners selected?
The Scholarship Committee reviews all applications for our Hughes/Demmin Memorial, Career Pathways, and Amherst High School Scholarships. The committee consists of 3 credit union board members; Gerald Ozimek, Donald Green, and Doris Murphy. The scholarship committee will examine all applications and reach a consensus on scholarship award winners no later than June 1, 2027.
NYCUA Scholarship Program applications are reviewed and graded externally by NYCUA. Winners are expected to be notified no later than May 31, 2027.
How are applicants notified of results?
Hughes/Demmin Memorial, Career Pathways, and Amherst High Scholarship applicants will be sent a letter notifying them the result of their scholarship application(s) no later than June 1, 2027.
Can you apply for multiple scholarship opporunities?
Yes! Members may choose to apply to any Amherst FCU scholarship opportunity they are eligible for. All members are eligible to apply for the New York Credit Union Association Scholarship Program.
